Strip Mangelos Vol. 1
Ivana Armanini / Marko Golub
22. prosinca 2017.

A comic book Mangelos Vol.
Ivana Armanini / Marko Golub
22.12. 2017 – 28.1.2018

The Mangelos Vol. 1 Comic book is the exhibition version of the album of the same name that deals with the life and works of Dimitrije Bašević Mangelos. The basic narrative structure of the book is based on several of Mangelos’s original texts: “Manifesto of Manifestos”, “The Šid Manifesto”, “The Battle for Nobleness” (from nostories) and a 1982 interview with him conducted by Mladen Stilinović. However, within that initial structure, the authors have also embedded numerous other biographical and artistic references in which reality and fiction, theory and art practice, documentary materials, and interpretation and imagination are all interwoven. The comic album in this sense does not function as a conventional biographical form; it does not recount the life and artwork of Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos; it does not explain or imitate him; but rather, it enters into a dialogue with him, accepting all his contradictions and recreating an authentic imaginary universe from his fragments.

In the Collection in Motion permanent exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, parts of the Mangelos Vol. 1 album are set along with his original works in the Project and Destiny section; next to the works of the Gorgona protoconceptual group, which Bašičević was a member of. Along with the comic book pages, there are catalogues, invitations, posters and materials from the MSU library and from the Documentation and Information Department and the Tošo Dabac Archive. The exhibited materials also attempt to at least partly attest to his curatorial activity – which in the later period is often intertwined with his artistic activity – and to his participation in informal art organizations such as the Podroom artists’ working community. Through the language of a comic that is borderline biographical and with the help of ephemeral materials and documents that are a testament to his critical and curatorial biography, in this exhibition we want to remember Mangelos not only as an artist and a critic, but also as a long-time cultural worker who has left an exceptional, though not yet visible enough a mark on the Museum of Contemporary Art, the institution where he worked, and on the art scene he was creating.
